Do you have boxes of old loose photos or picture albums taking up space in your closet? Maybe these family photos have been passing through hands for decades, and now they've somehow ended up in your home.

Maybe you don't have decades-old photos looking for a home. Perhaps the images from the photoshoot last spring with your family still haven't made it off the disc your photographer gave you.

As photography becomes more digitized, fewer people have physical copies of photos to work with. Whereas our parents had albums upon albums of old pictures, we share our images by scrolling through Instagram.

What can you do with old family photos, then, to get the most out of them? Read on for some unique ideas to ensure your precious memories don't get lost or damaged throughout the years.

Personalized Throw Blankets

Personalized photo blankets make lovely gifts and keepsakes. Immortalizing your favorite pictures and memories in blanket-form ensures you'll be able to look at your images whenever you want. No more pulling out bulky photo albums or scrolling through three years on Instagram to find your favorite memories.

The blankets can be made with just one photo or several to make a collage. You can be creative with how you want the images set up.

Perhaps you'd like to commemorate the school years of your graduating child. You can put their school photos from kindergarten to Grade 12 on their blanket.

Maybe your child is getting married, and you'd like to incorporate photos of the courtship with their significant other. Perhaps their first wedding anniversary is around the corner. You can put an image of them on their wedding day on a blanket for them to cherish.

Personalized blankets aren't just for the young, however. Your parents or grandparents would enjoy a blanket with their likeness on it, too. They make great birthday or anniversary gifts.

If you're saying "This sounds lovely, but are photo blankets cheap?", you'll be happy to know that they don't require a hefty investment. This is especially true when considering the quality of the blanket itself and how great it is to have something so functional with your images on it.

Personalized Pillows

If you don't need a blanket, why not try something considerably smaller? Customized throw pillows feature your image woven right into the fabric. They're high-quality and perfect for displaying your favorite memories on your sofa or even your bed.

Personalized Tote Bags

If pillows and bedding with your photos emblazoned on it don't spark your fancy, you can try something like tote bags. Having your old photos on a tote bag allows you to carry your memories along with you wherever you go. Whether you're hitting the grocery store or the gym, you can bring your precious memories along for the ride.

If you're getting married soon, you can use personalized tote bags for part of your wedding gift. Your parents, siblings, and wedding party will love having an image of you and your significant other on a tote bag for them to carry around the day of the wedding.

Throw a Photo Party

If you're feeling overwhelmed by the sheer amount of old family photos you have at your disposal, you may want to consider having a photo party. Set up the pictures in your home and enjoy reminiscing about the old times with your family.

You may wish to send your guests home with a small box of their favorite images if they so wish. Not only will this lighten your load, but it'll also bring your family member extra joy to have that photo to take home.

Get Crafty

Sometimes having thousands of photos in old boxes feels like you're doing those memories a disservice. No one can enjoy the images or the associated memories if they're packed away all the time. If you can resonate with this, it may be time to bring out your crafting supplies and get crafty.

You can create nearly anything from your old photos. Compile the images onto a coffee table in a collage format. To seal, cover with a glass tabletop or homemade decoupage.

Make Christmas ornaments. Gift them to your friends and family members during the holidays for their Christmas tree.

Create Scrapbooks

Scrapbooks are an excellent way for us commemorate old photos and memories. They're different than photo albums as you can decorate them in infinite ways. You can also leave spaces in your scrapbook to input handwritten memories.

If you have a lot of digital photos that need attention, scrapbooking online has become incredibly easy over the years. There are websites you can visit to create digital scrapbooks that you can order into coffee table books when you're finished. Your images can be automatically added using the scrapbooking software, or you can drag and drop them on your own if you prefer.

Organize Them

You may require the assistance of friends and family members as this can be a daunting task. This is especially true if you're going through old photos of your grandparents' and can't determine who it is in the images.

Once you know who's in the photos, be sure to label the back of them. If you know approximate dates or locations, that's important information to include also.

If you're handy with a computer, you may wish to scan the images, so they're available digitally. Be sure to still label the digital photos with the proper names, dates, and locations, too. The generations to come will then be able to view the images and have a glimpse into their ancestry.
